Nordstrom was founded in 1901 by John W. Nordstrom who immigrated from Sweden. The first store that opened was actually a shoe store in Seattle. The company entered the retail apparel business in 1963 and operated under the name of Nordstrom Best. The third generation of the family took the company public and the company assumed its current name, Nordstrom.
Today, Nordstrom is one of the top high end retail department store companies in the United States. Nordstrom sells clothing, handbags, cosmetics, fragrances, accessories, and even home furnishings in certain locations. There are approximately 112 full line department stores as well as 68 Nordstrom Rack clearance stores, one final clearance store called Last Chance, and two Jeffrey Boutiques. Nordstrom stores can be found in 28 different states.
